 CAUSES
Allergic dermatitis can be caused by
fungal infection
mange
bacterial hypersensitivity
bacterial folliculitis
fleas, ticks, lice, mites
yeast infections
hormonal disorders
animal bites
airborne allergens
contact allergens
food allergies
 

DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES
Rule out causes of skin irritation.

Check for mites and fungal infections with

skin scrapes
fungal cultures
dermal impression smears
Check for thyroid disease with a blood test 

A skin biopsy can find some mites or a bacterial infection.

If these are ruled out, then the cause may be allergic.
